A Tallahassee nonprofit that helps survivors of human trafficking has seen a three-fold increase in its case numbers since early last year as traffickers exploit vulnerable people made even more so by the pandemic.
Robin Hassler Thompson, executive director of the Survive and Thrive Advocacy Center, discussed the problem and the nonprofit’s efforts to combat it — including its upcoming annual fundraiser and awareness events — during a virtual announcement this week.
Hassler Thompson said the nonprofit has seen its running caseload increase from a handful of victims to 16. She attributed the increase partly to the loss of jobs, health care and housing during the pandemic, which human traffickers are exploiting.
