Domestic violence and human trafficking intersect much more than many people realize. At the onset of the pandemic, some of the first calls for assistance that STAC received were from domestic violence victims whose abusers started to sex traffic them. There are also cases from around the nation where domestic abusers forced their intimate partners and children into labor trafficking situations. While there are important differences between domestic violence and human trafficking, there are important similarities and overlaps.
October is domestic violence awareness month, and we encourage everyone to be mindful of how abusers and traffickers manipulate and control their victims, and how we all – as communities and individuals who want to make a difference – can work together to stop all forms of violence.
